BUNNY TRAINING
His
first task was to ensure that the girls received their Bunny training.
They learned how to cope with the figure-clenching Bunny outfit -
keeping stray pubic hairs out of sight and stuffing loo paper into their
D-cups so that their bosoms constantly threatened to spill out into
their customers' Martinis. They avoided this singular mishap by
employing the so-called 'Bunny Dip', a backwards twirling motion, when
serving drinks. Many ended up with bad backs.
To ensure absolute conformity with the Hefner rule book, the Bunny Girls
were supervised by a 'Bunny mother', who inspected costume and
deportment with all the rigour of a regimental sergeant major. One Bunny
mother monitored the weight of her charges with an industrial weighing
machine, which was normally used to measure commodities such as
potatoes. Of course, the Bunny Girls were rather more glamorous than
piles of King Edwards, but commodities they were nonetheless.
In his interview with Hefner, Martin Amis noted the 'special girls who
languish in semi-residence at the Playboy Mansion West, sunbathers,
jacuzzi-fillers, party-prettifiers', the centrefold also-rans. In
London, Los Angeles and the other cities around the world where there
were Playboy Clubs, there were regular culls of Bunnies who didn't quite
meet the exacting standards of Hefner and Lownes. Like cattle at a
market, they paraded along a catwalk under the scrutiny of their bosses.
The unlucky ones were consigned to a Bunny equivalent of the knacker's
yard.
Then there were the weekend parties thrown by Victor Lownes at Stocks,
his country house in Hertfordshire. Everyone was who was anyone went to
Victor's parties, the same castlist that played the tables at the club:
visiting American movie stars (all of whom knew Lownes), the Beatles,
George Best, Sean Connery, Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate - the 1960s
A-list. Guests and Bunny Girls who were given green dots to wear were
allowed upstairs to Stocks' many bedrooms. The drink and drugs flowed.
